A Data Subject Access Request (DSAR) is a request made by an individual to exercise their rights over their personal data. The most common is the right of access — asking what data an organisation holds and how it is used — but the same workflow usually covers requests for correction, erasure, and objection.
Under India’s DPDP Act 2023, Data Principals have clear rights to access a summary of their personal data and the processing activities, to seek correction and erasure, and to escalate through grievance redressal. Other regimes such as the GDPR and CCPA grant comparable rights. Crucially, these requests are time-bound, so organisations must be able to verify identity, locate data across systems, and respond within the statutory window.
The operational challenge is finding the data. Without an accurate inventory of where personal data lives, fulfilling a request becomes a manual scramble across systems — slow, error-prone, and risky.
